Our Story

Our mission is to increase the capacity of individuals in our community to make things by lowering the barriers

to the life changing skills, tools & relationships that drive a modern world by

providing access to specialty tools and equipment for prototyping, woodworking, textiles,

electronics etc, to people of all ages.

We believe that unleashing the innate innovation in people can make their lives better, can

improve our community, and can even change the world.

How We Started

The San Francisco Bay Area has always been a center for the maker movement; a center of creativity, innovation, and market disrupting inventions. On November 17th, 2017, a well used for-profit makerspace, TechShop, closed the doors on all 9 locations in the U.S. In the bay area it left 1,800 makers without a place to make. These innovators, hobbyists, students, and artists were out in the cold. That very day a group of customers from the Mid-Peninsula location formed the Facebook group Maker Orphans to connect the community and hold it together. Maker Orphans has now grown to 1,500 members from across the U.S.

Closer to home, we organized a series of public town hall meetings to discuss the future. The turnout was greater than we could have imagined. It became clear that the makers in our area would step up and create a new non-profit makerspace. Maker Nexus was born.

Maker Nexus operates a makerspace that is useful to new makers as well as experienced makers. Maker Nexus trains the next generation of makers. We provide an education program, both for adults and for teens. The core value of our organization is to encourage all makers to grow their skills, to pursue their goals and dreams; to make things that will change the world both locally and globally.

Creating our own community makerspace requires the cooperation of many volunteers. To pull the effort together we use the latest on-line team technology. We have open discussion forums on Slack, and our wiki persists the information we create. Our Facebook group hosts lively discussions. We also send out weekly updates in our email newsletter. We hold public town hall meetings to update the community and get feedback on our plans.

Maker Nexus is a registered California non profit corporation and we have 501(c)3 status. We vow to be a transparent organization, sharing everything from our financial plans and position, to our makerspace plans. We believe our maker members should know where their money goes, and have a say in how their monthly membership dues are being used.

But Maker Nexus is more than just a makerspace - we are a resource for makers everywhere. We maintain a public wiki that offers general information about equipment, makerspaces in other areas, resources for supplies and tools, and more. It is growing as crowd sourced knowledge from the maker community is added.

Starting a new makerspace is hard work. We have found resources scattered around the internet, but in some cases we have had to make things up ourselves. We aim to change that by sharing what we have with the world. Our wiki hosts a section of resources specifically for groups that want to create their own makerspace. As we create classes and infrastructure we will release what we create under a Creative Commons license so that others can build upon our work. We want to become a catalyst for the creation of makerspaces all over the world

Become Part of Us

We want you to be a part of this adventure. It's a big one, and a difficult one at times. But Maker Nexus is a community of people who truly believe in the value makers bring to society. We created a local makerspace that provides a bounty of resources for innovation, that encourages makers to grow, and that promises a long-term, sustainable future.

We hope you'll join us, and help keep the maker movement going!
