Position: Consulting Volunteer


The Consulting Volunteer works with and supports the Manager on Duty. Their task is to ensure the smooth operation of the maker space and first class member experience. This volunteer position helps the Manager on Duty as the frontline representative of Maker Nexus and provides excellent customer service and information to current and prospective members.

The Consulting Volunteer is often in a position to observe member behavior in the shop and will take pride in gently reminding members to work within our rules and policies.

Within their skillset, the Consulting Volunteer will take responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the various machinery under the supervision of the Manager on Duty.

As our front line contact with members, safety must always be top of mind for the Consulting Volunteer. Nothing is more important than a safe shop.

Essential functions:

  • Maintain a clean workshop (clean = safe); enforce that members clean up after themselves and follow other shop rules and policies.

  • Uphold Maker Nexus policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management.

  • Assist members to use tools effectively and safely

  • Machine maintenance, under direction of MoD

  • Answer inquiries and provide information on membership and programs

  • Help members signing up for classes and memberships

  • Maintain kitchen area, fresh coffee & popcorn

  • Maintain bathrooms as needed

  • Respond to member concerns

  • Attend meetings and trainings as required

  • All other duties as assigned by the MoD

Shifts are typically 4 hrs but can vary according to availability and need of coverage for the safe operation of the shop.

Founded in 2018, Maker Nexus is a non-profit community focused Maker Space. We operate a makerspace in Sunnyvale, California. Members work on their personal or business projects, prototyping or hobby. We offer classes and workshops for adults and youth. Our facility includes a woodshop, basic machining, CO2 lasers, 3D printers, vinyl cutter & heat press, various sewing machine and CAD and design software as well as workspace and co-working opportunity. We also host regular community events at our facility.
